Alex Oko

Alex Oko is a Romanian visual artist whose practice explores the relationship between image, matter, and uncertainty. His work investigates the ways in which meaning emerges through tension, contradiction, and transformation without settling into a definitive interpretation.
My practice begins with the image as a space of uncertainty. I am interested in what happens when an image can no longer be reduced to what it represents and begins to generate its own tensions, contradictions, and forms of presence.
Across different projects, this concern has taken different forms. At times, I have worked with oppositions between ideas, figures, or systems of thought; at others, with the relationship between matter, symbol, accident, and the unknown. I am not interested in constructing an image that offers a definitive answer, but one that keeps open the possibility of multiple meanings.
Composition, restrained colour, texture, and the accidents of matter all participate in this construction. They are not simply means of illustrating an idea established in advance. Often, meaning emerges during the process itself, through what the image allows, resists, or transforms.
In my recent work, this research has taken the form of a fictional archive populated by faces and bodies without stable identities. The paintings are connected through recordings, symbols, sites, and fragmentary events, gradually constructing a world whose history is never given in full, but must instead be reconstructed.
For me, mystery is not simply that which has yet to be explained. It is what continues to exceed explanation. Painting does not need to overcome the unknown, but to give it a form through which it can remain present.
At a time when images are produced and consumed almost instantaneously, I am looking for a kind of painting that slows the gaze. An image that is not exhausted by the first encounter and continues to generate questions even after the viewer has moved away from it.
Alex Oko is the artistic pseudonym of Alexandru Ocolașu, a Romanian visual artist whose practice focuses on painting and on the construction of the image as a space of research, appearance, and uncertainty.
He completed his BA in Painting at the George Enescu National University of Arts in Iași. His graduation project, Panorama deșertăciunilor, developed around the concept of coincidentia oppositorum and investigated the possibility of bringing contradictory realities, ideas, and states together within the same image.
During his master's studies, this research expanded toward the relationship between the painter's freedom, the limits of knowledge, and the mystery inherent in the creative process. His dissertation, Elogiul pictorului. Discurs spre ontologia misterului în alchimia creației, approached painting as a process of transfiguration and as an encounter between matter, symbol, accident, and the unknown.
His current artistic direction centers on faces and bodies without fixed identities, presented as fragments of an impossible archive. Individual works are connected through recordings, sites, symbols, and fictional events, gradually forming a world that is never narrated in full, but discovered through the traces it leaves behind.
